Here are some LA tips from the 2018-2019 cohort:

*Don’t worry too much because nobody else knows what they’re doing either.

*Come here in order to make progress in your career, and understand that hard work pays off, even if you don't end up going directly into what or where you first expected.

*Make friends with NYU kids that you weren't friends with before.

*Save way more money than you think you need. It’s easier to live an extra month or two at home and save up - than figure out how to make more money once you’re here.

*It's not as bad as you think it will be, but it's not as easy as you hope it will be. The things you think are going to be problems may not be problems, and things you didn't even realize were a thing are going to be the hardest parts.

*Face your fears and learn from them.

*Be open to all opportunities, but don't do something that makes you miserable even if you think it might help you in the long term.

*Don’t neglect the simple pleasures of being in a new place! Go to the beach, go to Disneyland, do all the touristy stuff that you’ll feel embarrassed to do when you’ve been living here for three years. It can feel like everyone’s working 24 hours a day here, but the truth is that you will be a more interesting and well rounded person if you do other things besides being in the entertainment industry.
Emebeit Beyene is "The Ethiopian queen from Philly who took classes abroad and studied film and photo flash focus record" as The Roots put it... except she studied Acting and Africana Studies at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. She appreciates the shoutout nonetheless. Emebeit is an actress, producer and co-creator of the webseries Downtown Girls, which came from four actresses who didn't see the stories that they wanted to see on TV so they created it themselves. With the success of Downtown Girls she's been featured in the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival Montreal, the American Black Film Festival, the LA Film Festival and on popular sites like Huffington Post, Glamour, Hello Giggles, Complex and Man Repeller. Currently based in LA, Emebeit is a working actress and can be seen in several short films in theaters nowhere near you. She enjoys watching tons of television (it's research!), the oh-so-great outdoors, eating froyo from Pinkberry, and, surprisingly, making people laugh.
(if this looks familiar - her writing partner, Emebeit, is above and she literally copied and pasted - lazy). Most recently Chandra was cast as a series regular in the Comedy Central pilot Southside. In her spare time she likes extended naps, junk reality TV and cuddling with her puppy.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Hey, new mentees! Here are some LA tips from the 2017-2018 cohort:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 107%;">*Be naive and unapologetically vulnerable and throw yourself into
everything with no hopes of getting anything in return. Here it is the things
you do that seem like a waste of time that end up being a game changer and
starting a relationship that could change your life. But first, really question
why you want to do this career path again and continually check in with
yourself and ask yourself that question as an adult - if it’s for the wrong
reasons, those will always be the reasons you aren’t succeeding. And if you can’t understand what the parking signs mean, just find a meter.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 107%;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">*Learn to drive! Do lots of networking, everyone is very friendly. Living on the east side is better than living on the west side.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">*Take some classes at UCB, or Second City. They're great places to learn about improv and writing, and to make new friends.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">*Be patient and approach your goals with flexibility as well as persistence. I would also say to reach out to any and all potential contacts, and be tactful but not shy.

*Say yes to anything. You can learn from a lot of experiences, big or small.

*Keep your mind open, don't get distracted. Do not settle, but don't be unreasonable either. Focus is important!
*Link up with other NYU alum out on the West Coast. I think it seems like an obvious thing to do, but I didn't do it until the mentorship program rolled around. <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Hey, new mentees! Here are some LA tips from the 2016-2017 cohort:

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">There is always something happening and there are so many opportunities to jump start a career here. Be open, be curious, and be willing to follow the path wherever it takes you. Your goals and aspirations are ever changing, and that is okay! We are so young and these things take time, so enjoy the journey!

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">It's going to be hard. It's going to take time. It's going to be ok. Get involved in a lot of groups, get out of the house, you will make friends. It won't happen right away. It won't happen for longer than you think. But it will be ok.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Give it time, that's what I've been told by numerous guests of mine at my restaurant, that it takes time to really fall in love with LA. And also, reach out to any contacts that you may have. When I came here and reached out to contacts of people I hadn't seen in YEARS, everyone welcomed me with open arms! They were so kind, and then you kind of find the people you like to spend your time with or that you want to work with. And it also takes time to find your group socially, and if that's important to you, definitely get out there and get a part time job and be open and patient. Also, grab at any opportunity you can. People out here can be flakey, so if they flake, that's just another opportunity for YOU. There are people here who take it very seriously, and there are people who do NOT. Meet as many people as possible and do as much as you can that is offered, you'll never know what can lead to something else.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">First: Have money saved to buy a car!!

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Second: Things WILL fall into place, but you must be willing to be open to things falling into place out of order and in different ways than you planned. Each step you make comes with its own complications (my agent is not solving all my problems, being SAG-Elig isn't booking me gigs left and right) so stay humble and become not only a working professional but a STUDENT OF THE INDUSTRY! There is seriously so much to learn. And there are so many people involved in production. You will do yourself a huge favor if you learn to walk in other people's shoes!! People are collaborative here, and kindness goes a long way. Being qualified isn't the only thing that will get you far--being reliable, organized, and having a great attitude is essential to making yourself indispensable.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Find people doing the things you want to be doing at roughly the level you want to be doing them at in two to three years, and become useful to them. (This includes how you want to be doing those things--if someone is doing cool art, but treats people cruelly, get out of there, or at least work around that person. Ambition is important, but compromising human dignity, your own or another person's, isn't worth it.) Also: never get angry in traffic; always have sunscreen with you. Assemble one earthquake kit for your car and another for your bedroom.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Always make time for what you’re passionate about. Especially if you are not working in the industry, make sure you are writing, watching movies, keeping updated on what is happening in the industry, et cetera. With that, don't settle -- push for what you want!

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Attend Tisch West Events and reach out to NYU Alumni. They will give you invaluable information and might even introduce you to more people who can help guide you towards the direction you want to head.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Triple check those parking signs.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Buckle up. Getting your foot into the door takes time, and maybe more time than you expected at first.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Remember why you moved here, and make sure that whatever you do is helping you move towards that goal.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">You're not as powerless as you think you are. A genuine conversation with your normal personality can go a LONG way in this city. Just be a damn thoughtful person and you'll get a lot from LA

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Cultivate a zen-like patience, and lead a balanced life. Build things in your life outside of your career and artistic work that gives you meaning and makes you feel good, whether that is a hobby, charity work or even a positive personal relationship (friends, girlfriend, boyfriend etc.), because you will get your ass kicked and be let down on a daily basis, and will find yourself desperate for something, however small, in your day that gives you a win.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Don't let other people's successes deter you. Everyone is on their own path and the way your success will manifest itself will be different from the next person. Be patient.

<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Never stop trying and work hard, make mistakes and learn from them with humility. People will give you a second chance if it's handled properly. Try to live relatively close from work as traffic is bad and commuting past 45mins each way can get gnarly. Socialize as much as possible.

Nicole Iizuka is a LA native who braved the cold east coast winters at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, but missed the sunshine of So-Cali. Nicole has worked for producers, agents & studio executives, yet her toughest boss by far has been her obsession with food. Two years ago she founded an experimental underground supper club Cloak & Dinner and after realizing that her torrid love affair could actually be a career, Nicole quit her creative development job at MGM for the fascinating freelance world of culinary & art. Since making the leap, she worked with the culinary team and art department on Gordon Ramsay's MasterChef and Hell's Kitchen, and with Stacey Kiebler, Debbie Fields and Chef Michael Chiarello on Supermarket Superstar. She is currently a Senior Producer at POPSUGAR overseeing lifestyle content. Nicole also blogs about my food mis-adventures on itsborderlinegenius.com. Advice for all, not just actors.I want to share this article with you to keep you aware of all the various people in the industry who claim to be helping you make "connections" but are really just exploiting you for their own financial gain. Please be weary of casting workshops - they are enterprises who's primary goal is to make themselves money; not to help you and your career. If you MUST do a casting workshop, please only attend it for research and informational purposes.
A theme seems to be coming up through all of my individual meetings with you guys, and I feel it important to say now: a career does not happen overnight. A career is not as easy to achieve as simply paying for access. It isn't even achieved, unfortunately, through WANTING it hard enough or thinking/worrying about it at all hours of the day and night. It is achieved through focus, determination, and the active act of being an artist and putting your art out in to the world so others can see. Don't wait to be an artist, who attend workshops to learn how to be an artist, be an artist now. Do the work that makes you a better person. Focus on who you are and what makes you absolutely unique and individual.

Please, dear god, please, don't think you need to fit a "type." Your type is YOU. Figure out what you're good at, what makes you special, and really hone it/focus it, and put it out there in the world.

This is a tough business, with a lot of ups and downs. Take heart. And don't let the vultures get you.

Congratulations on moving to LA. Just like thousands of graduates that descend upon the city in any given year, you’re going to have to reckon with the culture shock of living in Los Angeles. We’ve all been through it, which means you’re not special but it also means that you’re not alone. Even if you feel especially alone. I could guide you through every part of moving step-by-step, from the weird Uber/Lyft LAX pickup system to getting the best food at movie premieres but instead, I want to give you some advice on how to get the answers to questions that aren’t written down somewhere for you; other people.

Your best resource in Los Angeles is other people that have been through what you’re trying to do. The more recently, the better. It’s not much help to hear career advice from someone that broke in writing jokes for Bob Hope’s USO tours when writers are getting hired off twitter. How do you meet these peers of yours?

Your current friends. Odds are some of them know someone in LA that’s doing a similar thing to you.

School connections. There are NYU people out here that would be happy to help you. The mentor program, Tisch West, teachers or the geniuses in the careers center could help facilitate an introduction.

Online. There aren’t many rules on twitter. If you have mutual friends with someone of interest on facebook, perhaps ask that mutual friend for an intro?

Being social. Go to events that are relevant to you and strike up conversation with people about things that you’re curious about or interested in.

In whatever way you’re connected with these people, ask them about making a time to get coffee or a drink. Now, what do you ask these peers when you have their ear?

Ask them about what they did. Nobody has the same path in the industry but with enough stories, you begin to hear commonalities. Mail rooms, meeting casting assistants, writing assistants, etc. all feature prominently in these stories but they’re not the only way to go.

Ask people about what amazing Listservs they are on (some great ones have been running for years, some still run through Yahoo) or what facebook groups they recommend. Even if they can’t actually get you on there, the more you’re aware of them, the better. You’ll get on there eventually. If you’re not from LA, there’s likely a facebook group “State/Country X in LA” for you. Meet people with similar backgrounds and they might be able to add or direct you. These will be good for you to expand your network and ask even MORE questions.

Ask them about podcasts/websites/resources that have more specific information for your career path. Podcasts like Children of Tendu or ScriptNotes, institutions like UCB/Groundlings, courses like UCLA Extension or Script Anatomy, opportunities at festivals like Austin and Sundance – all are valid paths depending on what you want to do and hold the answers to many of your questions.

Ask them about where they live/lived. LA is big and unwieldy. You can live in Santa Monica and work in Glendale but no matter how much the sea air refuels you, it’s nothing compared to the brutality of that commute. If you’re not sure where you’re going to be working, try to start out fairly central on a month-to-month lease as you get a feel for the place and perhaps settle in to a more permanent position. When you think you know where you want to live, ask them about finding housing. I’ve personally heard of people getting things through Craigslist, facebook groups, ListServs or splitting the cost of a membership to paid services like The Rental Girl or West Side Rentals with some fellow searchers.

Ask them how they got around. Uber and Lyft have been game changers. Some friends of mine that irregularly travel for meetings/auditions have forgone cars and been perfectly fine with apps and the occasional train but if you have a 9-5 job (or, more likely, a 7-10 job) then you’re better off having a car. Ask if they bought or lease, their experience and decide if a lease or buying outright is good for you.

And finally, tell people what you want to do. In their day job or through their own lists, groups, etc. they will come across lots of opportunities. If they know what you want, they’ll be able to put 2 and 2 together and pass along relevant information. Be thankful for that and they’ll keep doing it.

You’ll ask the above questions to dozens of people, even after you’ve made your choices of housing, living and career path-taking. Information is power, nowhere is that more true than Los Angeles. So ask questions. Then, before long, you’ll find yourself a bit of an expert and you’ll be asked to write a guide to LA. Good luck!

So whenever you email a tracking board - just realize that your email is going out to 600+ people, so be sure the information you're sending or asking for is thoughtful and accurate. People hate spam :).

Also if you see an email coming from the board that you'd like to respond to, be sure to ONLY respond to the person who is sending the email, and make sure you're not also CCing or sending it to nyuinla@googlegroups.com as that will then send your reply to everyone on the board.

Entertainment Tracking Boards are primarily used for tracking information - specs, script sales, open writing / directing assignments at studios, new job moves etc.

While our tracking board could function as such, a lot of people use it more as a resource for finding scripts, information, starting writing groups, housing info, open job opportunities, looking for new roommates etc.

Here's a few good rules:

1. Be careful when using REPLY versus REPLY ALL. In general you don't want to send one-on-one emails to the whole board.
2. ISO - means In Search Of...
3. POACHED - means information generally taken from another source.
4. This is a Tracking Board, so if you have information you'd like to send you can email it to nyuinla@googlegroups.com which sends it to our whole network. You don't need to ask the permission of any of the board managers.
5. However, if you would like us to send something out (like a job posting or more sensitive information) feel free to email any of the board manager and he'd be happy to help you: Matthew Morgenthaler <mattmorgenthaler@gmail.com>

Job Opportunities

1. Please READ the job postings carefully. And follow the instructions. Assume that most of the people who are sending job postings ARE NOT the person accepting resumes.
2. Especially for people who are doing the "digest" emails, Google has added a word verification program to the email addresses for Spam purposes. So if you see an email address jd...@xyz.com, obviously it's missing some letters. You can click on the email address, which will take you to a word verification page & then will spit out the full address.
3. Occasionally some of the information in job postings is outdated. Especially if the title of the post says POACHED, we probably don't have any more information than what we emailed out. Sorry!

Entertainment Slang / Lingo

http://variety.com/static-pages/slanguage-dictionary/

And here's a great run-down of all the silly lingo used in the industry... like ISO and POACHED. But a great list none the less!

and ask the question of staying one.

This past month you have recorded your utilization of two important resources:
money and time.

Excluding the subjective sensation of validation,
various resources and their allocation will determine the sustainability
of a system designed, in this case, to preserve ones acting instrument and ability to play.

A resource is a source or supply from which benefit is produced.

Benefits of resource utilization may include increased wealth,
meeting
needs or wants, proper functioning of a system, or enhanced well being.

List the resources you utilize.

Economic Resources
list goods and services exchanged to satisfy human (your) needs and wants.

land physical locations such as place of residence, business or study
labor human skills, energy, abilities, knowledge and work
capitol money and the ability to acquire additional resources over time

Biological Resources
list resources living organisms (you) require for

growth
maintenance
reproduction

Categorize the resources you utilize.
biotic living. plants, animals, their products. people.
potential known to exist, may exist in the future. talent and ambition.
renewable can be replenished or reproduced.
forests, fisheries, education and inspiration.

some are perpetual resources like sunlight, air, wind.

tangible resources have a physical existence.

intangible resources such as ideas, brands and intellectual property exist in abstraction.

Assuming our theatrical ambitions exist within an economic reality,
we must study the management of such resources.

The highest rate at which a resource can be sustainably used is it's sustainable yield.

How do you manage your listed resources?
What is your sustainability yield?
Dahéli Hall I grew up in Miami, FL. I’m an only child and a first generation American. My parents are from the Caribbean, my mother is from Haiti and my father from Jamaica. It was very special growing up in such a diverse cultural household. My parents stressed the value of education and I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in Theater and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Southern California from Peter Stark Film/TV Producing Program. I am an actress, comic and filmmaker. I am best known as a cast member on Season 13 of "MADtv," where I was able to write several sketches for myself and other cast members. As the zaniest cast member on BET’s prank dating show “Hell Date”, I also crafted many of the prank scenarios. My body of work also includes, my own public access talk show, Dahéli Live, writing and hosting a daily news show on the web for Participant Media – Brain Food Daily and two HBO award winning short films, “The Memo” and “Mandingo in a Box”. A reoccurring theme in my writing is the range of social issues that people face. My first work of note, a short film entitled "The Memo," is a satire about Ted (Gary Anthony Williams), who doesn't "get the memo" that the black revolution has begun. In "Mandingo in a Box," I explored how the quest for the perfect man can sidetrack women in their pursuit of love. Both of my short films were produced by, current VP of Motion Pictures at Disney, Tendo Nagenda. I just completed writing and shooting my own sitcom pilot called “Public Access” about a former TV star who is trying to re-launch her career by doing a show at a public access station (yes, it’s slightly autobiographical). Comedy is my primary vehicle for expressing myself. I describe my style as a special blend of humor and intelligence. I think of comedy as "the great diplomat": "I believe people are most open when they laugh, and that’s perfect time to get them thinking and communicating."
Trey Livingston comes from the great mid-west where colleges have D1 sports teams and movies cost only $5 to see in theaters. A NYU-TSOA 08 Film & TV major, who focused on screenwriting & directing. Trey first moved out to LA in 2010 working as an accounting PA for Magical Elves, Inc. who specialize in Reality TV shows such as Top Chef, Work of Art, and The Real L Word. Once done with that, he interned at the Creative Department at Spyglass which eventually became MGM. Once a job opened up at MGM, he was offered the chance to interview for it and must have done something right because they hired him and he managed to survive it for almost two years. Now, I'm at Anonymous Content, a management/production company, where I work as an assistant to a variety of different departments. Trey currently lives in West Hollywood, always winds up in Hollywood, and visits Santa Monica & Downtown not nearly enough. Trey enjoy movies where things explode, exciting or hilarious TV, and art galleries more than words can describe.
